Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. This 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut via Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like conventional physical horror, but beneath Together exists a deep examination about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the two discover an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn horror experience, interspersing elements of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your other half and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu now.
